Satisfied

"I wrote the song after one of the biggest heartbreaks I ever had in my life. I was married to this man, and we lived and sang together for nine years. We sang gospel songs on radio station WSB in Atlanta, we sang on the Tennessee Barn Dance at WNOX and on the Midday Merry Go Round in Knoxville. We did a radio show every day, and every day I was brought to tears. He would put me down and tell me about the woman he had been with the night before. He got to drinking a lot and sometimes came home falling down drunk. I wanted James to go to church with me, but he didn't believe in God. He got to be very mean to me and it was torture. Finally, I said, 'I can't live that way any more.' We divorced in 1951, and I got a ticket to my mother's and father's in Ohio. When I tried performing again, I was going to my first solo show with Bill Carlisle. I was crying buckets of tears in Bill's car. My confidence was gone, and I didn't know if I could sing myself or if I could even do the show. All of a sudden, God spoke to me. The good Lord said, 'I'm satisfied and you're satisfied.' I was in the back of Bill's car and found a dirty old blank check on the floor. I cleaned it up a bit and wrote the lines to 'Satisfied' on the back of that check. It has been my most successful song." — Martha Carson
Satisfied
I've got that old-time religion
Got that old-time religion
Satisfied, I'm satisfied.
You ask me if I'm happy, if I have peace within
If I'm worried about tomorrow when I reach my journey's end
Well, I'm satisfied with my Jesus, when He knocks, I'll let Him in
He'll go with me through the valley, for I know He is my friend.
Satisfied, satisfied
No troubles can ever get me down
For when my eyes are closed in death
With my Jesus I'll be at rest
Then you'll know I'm satisfied.
I've got that old-time religion
Got that old-time religion
Satisfied, I'm satisfied.
Now if my friends, they all forsake me, and they turn me from their door
If they sow no seeds of kindness, make the thorns in my path grow
Oh, it won't matter over yonder when I've reached that other side
For I'm gonna sit down by my Jesus, satisfied, satisfied.
Satisfied, satisfied
No troubles can ever get me down
For when my eyes are closed in death
With my Jesus I'll be at rest
Then you'll know I'm satisfied.
I've got that old-time religion
Got that old-time religion
Satisfied, I'm satisfied.
