The Last Roundup
by Billy Hill
""Roundup'
probably was inspired by a visit to Texas on a ranch
during roundup time, according to Nat Vincent who has
been a collaborator on one of my father's songs. Quite
often a cowboy would be trampled to death if he fell
from his horse during a roundup, and my father and Nat
had witnessed this happening, standing on a knoll
overlooking the plains. Nat said many times the older
cowboys going into a roundup would speak of this as
perhaps their last roundup, meaning they feared they
might not live to the next one.

The Last Roundup
I'm headin' for the last roundup
Gonna saddle Old Paint for the last time and ride
So long, old pal, it's time your tears were dried
I'm headin' for the last roundup.
Git along little dogie, git along, git along
Git along little dogie, git along
Git along little dogie, git along, git along
Git along little dogie, git along.
I'm headin' for last roundup
To the far away ranch to the Boss in the sky
Where the strays are counted and branded, there I go
I'm headin' for the last roundup.
I'm headin' for the last roundup
There'll be Buffalo Bill with his long snow white hair
There'll be old Kit Carson and Custer waitin' there
A-ridin' in the last roundup.
I'm headin' for the last roundup
Gonna saddle Old Paint, for the last time and ride
So long, old pal, it's time your tears were dried
I'm headin' for the last roundup.
