Too Late
by Jimmy Wakely
"I had a brother-in-law who was always knocking his wife around and drank a lot. I got to thinking that maybe one day she'd just have enough and leave, so I wrote a song called 'Too Late.' I recorded it as my first number on Decca and it was a smash. I went back to Oklahoma City and ran into my brother-in-law. (Meanwhile I had written some other songs.) And he said, 'Man, you never wrote anything as pretty as "Too Late" in your life.' I said, 'You should like it, you son of a bitch, it's the story of your life.'" —Jimmy Wakely
Too Late
Upon my pillow was a letter
"You know I love you as no other
Too late, too late, my heart keeps crying
1941 by MCA Music.
Too late, too late to ask forgiveness
Too late for me to cry
She's gone, she's gone, she left this morning
And this is how she said goodbye:
It said "I still don't want to go
But if you don't change your way of living
May God have mercy on your soul."
But you have played around too long
Goodbye, good luck, and don't forget me
For I will be a long time gone."
You should have known she'd go away
Too late, for now you'll have to suffer
It always seems to end this way.
